Three high school seniors gain supernatural powers after finding something mysterious in an underground cave. Will these new found powers change these young men for the better? Will the power corrupt them? Or will power do what it always does and simply magnify who they were already becoming?
Think of "District 9" meets "Hancock". Most of the film was shot in first person perspective (gorilla style) of loner, Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan - above) as he #Chronicles his life and everything around him. As the teens learn to use their new found powers, they become almost inseparable. Steve Montgomery (Michael B. Jordan), Matt Garetty (Alex Russell), and Andrew each play roles of a high school student that almost everyone can relate with. The film waste almost no time establishing those roles and then stretching them as these three stretch their telekinetic powers to their limits. Without giving away the film, lets just say there are a few surprises and after the first 20 minutes the movie quickly escalates to completely fill the remaining hour. You will not want to get out of your seat!
I loved this movie for its creativity and simplicity. How the storyline transitions from a playful movie about high school kids acting like "kids", to a dark and serious. The gorilla style filming might be a bit much for some audience members but it is well worth it. Hope you all enjoy what I consider to be the best movie of the year so far!
