Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen)
Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark)
"Hunger Games", based on the book series written by Suzanne Collins, was one of the most anticipated movies of the year breaking multiple single day and opening weekend records. The story of the courageous and strong-willed Katniss Everdeen from District 1, volunteers as tribute to replace her 12-year old sister who was originally selected to compete in this years' games. Hunger Games picks 24 children (two from each of the 12 districts) to compete to the death, where only one can stand victorious.
With the run time of over two hours, the length of this movie may be a bit much for some of the original readers who originally fell in love with Katniss & Peeta. The movie is put together very well and follows closely with the original novel. Katniss possesses all of the traits of an admirable role model for the target audience. The film perfectly captured the dicotomy between the classist districts from the extravagant clothing and living conditions of the wealthy Capital City to the dingy, dirty and run down District 11.
The story was beautiful constructed and engaged the audience in the plight of Katniss, as well as the other tributes that become both her friends and enemies. This movie rated PG 13 for violence. The premise of the children between the age of 12-18 fighting to the death may be a bit much for some viewers, although the director does and excellent job of down playing the gore and graphicness of what is actually taking place. I really enjoyed this movie and it is something that i would recommend to any adult who has read the book "Lord of the Flies" or "Hatchet". Being that this movie is a trilogy, don't fret. The movie does not end leaving the viewer on the edge of their seat.
